An honest comparison

Portraits vs Spidergap

Two 360° tools with different centres of gravity — the development workflow, or the assessment itself.

Cards on the table first: we built Portraits, so the bias is in the page. What we can promise is a fair account of where each tool wins — Spidergap has been doing this for around sixteen years and earns its Capterra rating. By the end you should be able to make the call yourself.

Where Spidergap wins

Maturity and focus. Spidergap does one thing — 360° feedback — and has refined it since 2010: 3,500+ organisations, a 4.8 Capterra score across 119 reviews with customer support rated 4.9, and a default questionnaire they publish validation for. Their reports are genuinely clear, every report ends with a personal development plan template, and their consultant plans cover multiple clients with your own logo and colours. Even their omissions are principled: they deliberately don’t ship built-in benchmarking, arguing norms are often misused. If you want the most proven, simplest tool for running a sound 360, Spidergap is a very good answer.

Where Portraits wins

What happens after the report. Portraits treats the 360 as the start of a development engagement rather than the end of an assessment: AI drafts the executive summary and the strength and development themes, the participant works through a GROW-based development plan in their own portal, and coaches see progress across every client from one place — with white-label portals on the Agency plan. If your practice is coaching leaders through change, not just measuring them, that workflow is the product.

The pricing shape differs too. Spidergap is annual and per feedback recipient — £899 a year including ten people, with one assessment free to try. Portraits starts free (ten participants, one full cycle), then Professional is £79 a month with unlimited cycles and participants. For a solo coach running a handful of 360s a year, either can be economical; for a growing practice running many, the unlimited monthly shape usually works out simpler and cheaper — run your own numbers on both.

The honest caveat

We’re new, and Spidergap is not: sixteen years of iteration and thousands of organisations are worth a lot. If you want the safest, most-reviewed option, pick Spidergap. If you want the tool built around the development conversation that follows the feedback, that’s us.

Actively looking to move? The Spidergap alternative page covers when switching makes sense — and when it doesn’t.

The quickest way to compare is to run one free cycle in each — both tools let you start without paying.
